What factors effect fuel prices?
In the long term, the greatest single factor influencing fuel prices is the cost of crude oil. The main driver of crude oil is global supply and demand. Like most trading commodities, the relationship between the two will dictate the direction of any price changes.
On a macro level, the global economic environment has a big part to play. As crude is sold in dollars per barrel, currency movements i.e. the strengthening or weakening of the US dollar in the market can result in price movements. Similarly the performance of global economies can also influence the market. A prime example of this is during the global recession in 2008 crude oil prices dropped to all-time lows.
Aside from crude oil prices, in Ireland, taxes and levies form a considerable part of the price of a litre of fuel. Any adjustment to tax rates in this respect will result in price movements.
