RTFO set to increase to 32% by energy content from 1st January 2026

The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) will increase to 32% by energy content from 1st January 2026. This change replaces the current 25% mandate to further increase the amount of renewable fuels that must be blended into transport fuels, mandating all vehicles to run on fuels with higher renewable content. As part of the updated framework, the advanced biofuel submandate will also rise from 1.5% to 5%, requiring suppliers to use more advanced biofuels derived from waste and residue feedstocks.

Renewable fuels continue to play a key part of the national climate policy to support Ireland’s aim of reducing transport emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving Net Zero by 2050. The RTFO requirement is expected to rise every year and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a solution that can help meet these targets.

HVO is a renewable diesel that is chemically similar to conventional diesel and suitable for blend levels up to 100%. Inver imports HVO into its jointly owned terminal in Foynes, where our flexible infrastructure allows blending to be adjusted with ease to remain fully compliant with RTFO obligations.
As a certified supplier for renewable fuels, Inver Energy can provide its customers with Proof of Sustainability (PoS) documentation, which is recognised by international bodies and regulators, supporting customers to ensure compliance with the scheme or legislation applying to their operations.
