A renewable alternative for diesel engines
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) also known as renewable diesel, is made from waste-derived raw materials like used cooking oil, agricultural residue, and non-food crops. It is a lower carbon alternative to conventional diesel and can be used in diesel vehicles, as well as in a wide range of on-road and off-road commercial applications without the need for modification.
Available at selected Inver forecourts and via commercial delivery, HVO can help Irish motorists and businesses to immediately lower their carbon emissions.
Expanding access to renewable fuels
Inver is committed to supporting Ireland’s decarbonisation targets by expanding access to lower carbon alternatives such as HVO through our jointly owned terminal in Foynes.
All HVO supplied by Inver is produced from certified waste-derived and sustainable raw materials, and every litre is fully compliant with EU regulations. We are dedicated to making this renewable fuel widely available across our forecourt network nationwide.
Inver has adopted HVO across its haulage fleet, reducing our operational CO₂ emissions and contributing directly to Ireland’s climate goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
HVO is produced by hydrotreating waste-derived feedstocks such as used oils and agricultural residues to create a paraffinic diesel with properties similar to conventional diesel fuel.
HVO meets the EN 15940 specification, the European standard for paraffinic diesel fuels, ensuring it is suitable for most diesel-powered engines.
The HVO supplied by Inver is produced from certified waste-derived materials through auditable, sustainable supply chains. This ensures compliance with EU standards and contributes to national carbon reduction targets.
HVO is approved by a wide range of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and can be used as a direct replacement for conventional diesel in most diesel engine vehicles and machinery. If compatibility is uncertain, it is recommended to consult the manufacturer before switching.
Commercial: It is suitable for use in heavy-duty vehicles, buses, agricultural machinery, heating systems, and more. HVO also powers generators for construction sites, data centres, events, and other commercial operations.
Motorists: Diesel vehicles displaying the XTL tag on the fuel cap are compatible with HVO.
Yes, HVO can be used on its own or mixed with conventional diesel in any ratio. It is 100% interchangeable and will not affect engine performance or fuel systems.
